Recently I was sent a book to read and review by a book company. Now before we start I would like to promise you that all the opinions I am about to share with you 100000000000000% belong to me. Right, now I’ve said that shall we get started?
Sometimes it’s the little things in life that we love the most. The little things like memories and stories that we can hold in our hearts forever and ever. It’s those visual things that are portrayed so realistically that you want to be a part and be there; they’re the things that mean something. As soon as I began reading this novel Bird Box began to mean something really special to me.
Bird Box is a stunning, thrilling and exciting novel written by the very talented Josh Malerman. The book is very mysterious as it portrays life through the main character of Malorie who has been deeply affected by a sudden change in the life she has always known. Wherever you are right now, I urge you to look around and take in the view and really appreciate what you see. Do you feel safe to allow your eyes to wander upon the colourful place that we call our world? I hope the answer is yes, for many do indeed feel safe doing something as normal as looking around. It’s just one of those things in life that we take for granted. Malorie lived a life exactly like ours but over a couple of weeks everything changed…
Crisis after crisis after crisis after crisis. At first it was the same type of people who were affected, the same type of people who tragically were slaughtered by the unknown. There was the same common theme: the victim had seen something before violently turning mad and brutally killing themselves. But pregnant Malorie didn’t like to believe what she read on the internet or heard on the radio or watched on the TV; all her life she had looked around carelessly consuming in sights of normality. She wasn’t going to change for this murderous “creature” lurking in the unknown. She wasn’t that type of woman who wanted her baby living in a world of fear, a world that was not safe, but the stories became more frequent and the death toll continued to increase rapidly.

Deep down she began to realise there was no escaping so she did what the rest of the world was doing to try and prevent death: she covered her windows with blankets and blocked out the outside world. No longer was it safe to open her eyes outside of her house- especially not if she wanted to survive. The stories continued to flood onto the radio and upon the TV but the constant replaying of these events only increased Malorie’s fears for all of her family. At least she had her sister right by her side.
But it wasn’t too long until Malorie’s only support system failed and a tragedy hit closer to home than she would ever have imagined. With relatively low choices left pregnant Malorie braved the outside world and fled to a tiny house she’d seen advertised in a newspaper: a rest bite for those affected by this “creature”.
Somehow she got there alive, not seeing anything deadly on her way. All those living there let her in. Some she got along with and some she didn’t. Either way she was stuck there with these people, her only support system in the entire world. People came and people went but Malorie was the one to always stay; especially now she had a developing baby to look after, nurture and care for. On a journey of making friends and learning to work as a team this book tells the gripping story of the importance of unity and trust within a society.
The book begins four years later and Malorie is still in that very house. Malorie has a choice. She either stays put or makes the most dangerous trek down the river of her life. Worse still, she and her children are blindfolded, to try and protect themselves from the unknown “creature”…
What I find fantastic about this book is the way in which is it written. Malerman has written his novel in third person; normally I feel that books written in the third person can be a little vague as we don’t always get told inner feelings from all characters but this book definitely portrays all emotions, which is brilliant. I also love the fact that this book is structured so that the story is told a chapter at a time: when the drama starts and then a chapter of Malorie’s life four years later. The story meets in the middle and immediately all makes perfect sense. Trust me, when you reach that point you will feel victorious.

When I read a book I want to feel part of it and I felt every inch of Bird Box. The tension is amazing, so much so that I actually had sweat embedded between my brows as I read certain extracts. My heart honestly was pounding and especially when I read late at night I felt fearful of what was in the unknown. From page one I was drawn in. The plot is amazingly interesting and I promise you that you would adore this novel. It is so unique. When choosing books it can be very easy to fall into the habit of picking books from the same genre. Well, I am so glad that I was sent this novel with quite little knowledge about the book because it gave even more excitement when it arrived and I picked it up.
Being able to pick up a book, read the blurb and be instantly hooked despite it not being your normal choice is genuinely bodacious because it really boosts opportunities for the world of reading!

Don't open your eyes"
Overall I would give this book a 9/10. I am one of those people who are reluctant to give 10/10- maybe that’s just because I’m quite particular when giving top marks. The only thing I would have loved to see in the book would be a bit more of what happens to Malorie right at the end. Saying that, I do believe a book has to end somewhere and in a way it is actually quite nice to leave what happens up to the imagination of the reader.
If I had to describe this book in four words I would say: exciting, tense and beautifully written!
I hope that you have enjoyed reading this review. I know that I really enjoyed reading the book and writing the review for you. If you are interested in reading Bird Box then I seriously recommend that you buy it immediately. I will leave the link here so you can directly reach the site.
