Here’s a question for you: chocolate or grapes? What did you choose? Maybe you picked grapes. “Healthy option this time,” you tell yourself being optimistic, and impressing the audience. But if you were in your home alone with no one watching, no one judging would you really pick the fruit? I wouldn’t, I’d pick crisps and an endless supply of sweets. But we all have to have a little self-control sometimes because let’s face it both sweets, crisps, and chocolate can’t be good for us can they? Some people are lucky enough to have roaring metabolisms. Hands up, I have to admit to being one of those people however I am only 15 so there could (and probably will) be a time where that will all change!
Sometimes I stare deeply into the mirror with a saying in the back of my head “You are what you eat”, and often I wonder if that really is true. Over the last year or so I have begun to believe that old saying. It seemed that every time I ate something naughty I turned into the devil (only joking), however certain food types definitely affected the quality of my skin and thieved from me my youthful glow. Many people may also agree that the best way for healthy skin is to eat healthy. I couldn’t agree more. But is it really that easy?
I wish.

When I was five, possibly younger the “5 a Day” campaign really set ship in the U.K. All of a sudden interesting veg that I’d never seen before was making an appearance on my plate: broccoli, cauliflower and basically just a wider range of healthy foods! My mum did everything in her power to keep us healthy (and still does) so if that meant more veg then so be it. If it was on my plate I had to at least try it before dismissing it as “gross!” I didn’t actually have a problem with trying new things; in a way it made dinner time more exciting.
Let’s face it. It was always going to happen. It was only a matter of time…
What happens when you’ve acquired your taste and there’s no longer any new fruit and vegetable on sale: just same old peas and same old carrots. Don’t get me wrong there’s still a variety but we can get to that point where incorporating fresh food into the diet becomes a little boring and seriously is it surprising? There are four at the max fruit and veg aisles in the supermarket. What are the rest filled with? Tempting food: tastes so good but does such damage. Maybe we crave unhealthy food from time to time because of the galore surrounding chocolate and sweets.
How often do you get a TV advert showing tonnes of excited children jumping up and down just to try a banana? Well, I’ve never seen something like that in England. But chocolate adverts are forced in my face repeatedly: happy people, beautiful people, smiling people!
Chocolate. Chocolate. Chocolate.

People like a bargain so if you have to pay 50p for a bar of chocolate or £2.00 for a bag of apples which are you going to choose? I’ll let you answer that one.
Fruit is extremely expensive due to all the food miles it travels to reach your home. With many families around the world literally living on the bread line how can people afford fruit and veg, and more importantly a combined five every day? It seems ludicrous. The parliament leaders may pledge that we eat “5 a day” to keep healthy and fit, and that’s fantastic but for many that simply isn’t feasible. Do they forget people don’t have money to buy exquisite luxuries like posh mangoes shipped in from Peru? Should it be up to the government to reduce the price of fresh produce if that means the public would be able to afford a healthy lifestyle? Possibly, if it is pliable then surely it should be given a go, but once more it is a tricky expense.
Now I ask you honestly is it any wonder that the children of today would rather a chocolate biscuit than carrot sticks? Maybe not. Overall, it is important to bear in mind that some children would rather fruit or veg and to them I say we give a round of applause. I think the message lingering deep in this post is that you should, obviously, try your hardest to be healthy but if you have a day where you crave chocolate (girls we all get ‘em) then be a little rebel, pop to the shop and buy the biggest bar available!
There’s always tomorrow to “be healthy”… Just remember healthy has many benefits. The most imperative thing is to have a balanced diet in correlation to a regular amount of exercise. At the end of the day as long as you're smiling and happy then you've got it right...
Hope this helps you, let me know what you’re opinions on healthy eating are. Stay healthy and happy too- even if that means stuffing a wad of chocolate truffles into your mouth!!!
